Allegory of the Planet and Continents, 1752, oil on canvas, 73 x 54 7/8 in. (185.4 x 139.4 cm), Metropolitan Museum of Art. This was Tiepolo's largest and most recognizable oil painting. It depicts Apollo, and surrounding him are the deities of the sun god which symbolize the planets. This painting is often considered Tiepolo's greatest achievement.
About this Painting Giovanni Battista Tiepolo (1696 - 1770) was arguably the greatest painter of 18th century Europe. His art differed from the convention through his use of grandiose mythology and fantasy not common during his time. This time period in Venice was dominated by the Tiepolo family. Venice had lost influence as an artistic center since the most prominent artists of the time were working in Rome. However, the father-son team Giovanni and Domenico brought Venice into the spotlight once again. Tiepolo was born in Venice and belonged to a prestigious family. He became the student of Gregorio Lazzarini, a successful painter. He began to receive some recognition from 1719-1720 after painting a scheme of frescoes for the wealthy Giambattista Baglione and afterwards he began to receive other major commissions. He also explored new media and artistic subjects. Tiepollo went on to produce two sets of etchings, the Capricci and the Scherzi di fantasia, and their subjects were often fantastical. By 1750, Tiepolo was widely known throughout Europe, and was commissioned to produce ceiling paintings in Germany in the New Residenz Palace. He brought his father along, and the frescoes they made are considered to be the Tiepolo family's greatest masterpieces. When he returned to Venice three years later, he was in popular and in demand. He continued to work on frescoes and commissions before dying on March 27, 1770. Read more here and here!
